After years of seeing my brother and his peers struggle, I realized teaching is the only way for me to make the changes I want to see. I believe that if I teach activities that encourage independence in my classroom, then students will not have as much anxiety when they get jobs or doing simple tasks like placing an order at a restaurant. But what happens after they complete the program? A very large number of them struggle to find jobs and require job coaches whenever they work. One of the major reasons for this is because they lack independence skills which they were not taught in school. The lack of independence affects students self esteem and enables them to constantly rely on others. One of the biggest things their family had me emphasize was independence. As a special education major this article is insightful to the importance of supporting independence both in and out of the classroom.
