Walsh presents the ideas of inequality in "A woman to Her Lover" as at the time the poem was written women were supposed to get married, have children and look after the family, not only this but they were supposed to do the housework and cooking. This poem is about a woman going against the society of her time. The quote "to bear you children, wearing out my life in drudgery and silence" shows that during this time this was a womans job and that she wasn't going to do it anymore. It also shows that they are completely enequal to men.

Walsh uses the structure of the poem to show how unequal woman actually are, the poem is 4 stanzas long and is irregular, the first and third stanza are similar lengths but the second is shorter, and the forth is much longer, showing how irregular the woman in the poem is. The poet uses enjambment to show the woman's annoyance building up, with each comma in stanza 4 the woman appears to get more annoyed at her society, and wants to be equal to the men. The 4th stanza being irregualar and different to the rest by containing only one full stop at the end shows that she is also irregular and different to the rest of the women of her time. The poem is in first person narritive voice, which shows personal experience, The noun 'I' is used to create an understanding between the author and the reader such as "O lover I refuse you!" suggests that it is something Walsh was experienced herself.

Walsh presents the theme of love as repeating harshness and inequality for women the sentence "conqueror to the vanquished" implies that she is trapped as a slave to her husband doing housework, cooking and looking after her children rather than being in a loving relationship. The noun conqueror suggests that she has given up trying to fight him and has let him control her. The verb "Vanquished" suggests that because she is weak as shes a woman, shes defeated by her husband as in the time the poem was written, men were allowed to enforce physical violence apon their wifes.

Walsh presents ineqality by saying "I am no doll to dress and sit for feeble worship" meaning she doesnt want to be an object anymore, she doesnt want to be controlled by her husband, she wants to be free and happy. A doll is a toy that people play with and toss around freely, shes trying to say that she doesnt want to be thrown around by society. The adjective "feeble" shows that she is too physically weak to fight back, even though she really wants to escape her husbands grasp and become her own person, rather then becoming what he wants her to be.

COMPARRISON:

Both poems are written in first person to convey the idea of it being a personal experience to try and engage the reader and make the reader see it in their way. Both poems show mixed emotions towards the men in the poems, the oxymoron in the poem 'Haviham' by Carol Ann Duffy "Beloved sweetheart bastard" gives the impression that she hates him but at the same time she loves him. Where as in "A Woman to Her Lover" most of the emotions are that she hates him more then anything.

Walsh conveys the idea of inequality in 'A Women To Her Lover' as at this time in history, women were inferior to men and were expected to get married, cook, clean and stay at home to raise the kids. The ideas presented in this poem are that she wants equality, and that she is not the stereo typical women of the time and this is conveyed when it says, "to make of me a bond slave to bear your children." She is saying she will not bear her husbands children and be treat as though she is a slave for their child. At the time, women would not dare to disrespect their husbands, however she goes against this as in the poem, it says, "fool, i refuse you!" She is once again going against the strong stereotypical idea of the 'perfect women.'

By the use of enjambment, Welsh shoes the women's frustration and annoyance building up through the commas in stanza 4 where the women seems to be getting more irritated by her society as she wants to be equal to men. Compared to the other 3 stanza's, the 4th one is irregular as it only contains one full stop at the end and I thin this shows she feels irregular to other women as she is isn't the sterotypical lady of the time. Also, the poem is in first person narrative voice, showing her personal experience of wanting to break free from the gender stereotype that she is stuck in. Welsh uses first person narrative voice to convey the personal feelings of the women not feeling as if she fits in equally to society.

"I am no doll to dress and sit for feeble worship" means that she is not just some silly toy. The connotation of the noun, "doll" shows that she isn't there to be played with, tossed around and controlled. Dolls are toys that people pay with and do as they please with, therefore Welsh is trying to convey the message that he refuses to be cntrolled by her husband and be tossed around by society's expectations. Also, the adjective "feeble" shows how she will not be seen as weak anymore. The meaning of 'feeble' is when someone is lacking physical strength and she is saying that she won't sit and be seen as weak by her husband or anyone else. Welsh does this to reinforce the idea that women should not be seen as pretty stereotypes who stay home and look after the children whilst their husband works.

COMPARRISON-
Both 'Havisham' and 'A Woman To Her Lover' are both written in the first peron to create the idea of a personal experience. Also, the oxymoron in Havisham, 'Beloved sweethearr bastard' gives the imression that she hates him, but at the same time is madly in love with him.
