1. Caliban has a role of a slave on the remote island under Prospero. Caliban does the dirty work whereas Ariel does the spying with a friendly relationship with Prospero.

2. Caliban is the son of Sycorax, a witch that was exiled to the island when pregnant with him. Years after she died, Prospero enslaved him.

3.Caliban is not very fond of Prospero during the tempest because he treats him poorly in terms of both words and physicality. However when Prospero first arrived on the island,he was very respectful to Caliban.Miranda had a neutral appeal to Caliban prior to the tempest though he soon attempted to rape her which caused her to grow fearful of him.

4. Considering Caliban almost raped a woman, we would not be sympathetic to his situation as he clearly is not humane. If we were in Prospero's place, we would not want him anywhere near Miranda and would opt for exiling him completely.

1. Ferdinand believes that everyone on the ship is dead and Ariel encourages this by saying the king is dead.

2. Miranda's first response to the sight of Ferdinand is that she fell in love with him. Ferdinand is the only man she saw, beside Prospero and Caliban (most probabaly male).

3. Ferdinand's first response to Miranda is he fell in love with her because he thought she was a goddess because of Ariel's song.

4. Prospero's response to Ferdinand and Miranda is happy because he wanted them to fall in love but he never admitted it. Ferdinand's the son of the king (prince). If Miranda marries him their child will be the heir to the throne and also, making the two fall in love will help Prospero get back at Antonio.

1. In scene 2, Prospero is very comforting towards Miranda after she had just witnessed the destruction of a ship. He comforts her by saying that the storm and the boat with the people in it were all created with his magic. He says that there was absolutely no harm done, when he says that there was "not so much perdition as an hair" (I.ii.30). He also distracts from the situation by telling Miranda the story of their exile to the island.
2. Twelve years ago, Prospero was the Duke of Milan, making Miranda a princess. While Prospero was busy practicing his magic, Prospero's brother and Miranda's uncle, Antonio, eventually started taking more repsonsibilities. Over time, Antonio turned everyone over to his side and became the new leader. Soon after, he banished both Prospero and Miranda from the country, and out to the sea.
3. He plans to handle it right now that his enemies have landed on the island. It seems as if he wants to divide and conquer

1. Prospero asks Ariel to create the tempest that destroys the ship, separate the mariners around the island, and become a nymph of the sea and become invisible. She is good at the tasks because she is magic and can do the tasks efficiently.

2. Ariel moves in air.

3. Most of the mariners with the exception of Ferdinand and the mariners on the king's ship (charmed to be asleep) made it back to Italy.

4. Ariel wants freedom from being Prospero's slave. They are justified because they have been Prospero's slave for a long time doing whatever he wants them to, and he has constantly promised them freedom. Prospero fights back because he still needs them for his plans, and believes that they owe a debt of gratitude to him for freeing them from Sycorax.

5. When Sycorax was banished to the island for supposed witchcraft, Ariel became her slave, and when Prospero got to the island, he 'freed' them and then made them his slave.
