Group A) The Partiality of Friendship - what do you think? what would you do? by Shivani Gandhi

The Partiality of Friendship
Jim has the responsibility of filling a position in his firm. His friend Paul has applied and is qualified, but someone else seems even more qualified. Jim wants to give the job to Paul, but he feels guilty, believing that he ought to be impartial. That's the essence of morality, he initially tells himself. This belief is, however, rejected, as Jim resolves that friendship has a moral importance that permits, and perhaps even requires, partiality in some circumstances. So he gives the job to Paul.

I would have done the same thing as Jim and give my friend the job because friends come before partiality and if my friend is also qualified for the job then why not. I think it would be fun working with my friend and I would have a colleague that I know I could trust.

I think giving the job to Paul was Wrong. Paul would have struggled as he wasn't much qualified for the job. Therefore Jim would have put Paul in a poor position. I would give the job to whoever is more qualified for the benefit of the workplace.

There is no such thing as more qualified. Jim has seen first hand what his friend is capable of. He has seen his strength and weaknesses which allows him to make an educated choice. Also it could be the case that the "more qualified" person lied or embellished to make himself look better. In the end you should always pick the devil you know over the devil you don't.

There has to be a line drawn when it comes to friends and the workplace, if the other person was more qualified then they should have gotten the job based on the qualifications alone. A job should never be taken away from someone just because their the bosses friend. So Jim was in the wrong and shouldn’t have done that. -A.B

I would feel just as bad because we are put in the position to choose our friend or our job. At the same time, that friend should understand that it would not be fair to hire someone just because of connections. Yet, I also feel like the other participant could be lying. I could hire the other participant, and if I feel like they are lying and they were not as qualified, I would confront and fire them and hire my friend. It would also depend on how badly that friend would need a job.
