Through this space created they will learn and utilize the different steps in the writing process.
The writing process includes: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.


Components of Writing Workshop:  
  • Mini-lesson : At the beginning of each writers-workshop the students will participate in a mini-lesson that is focused on one specific trait of the writing process. 
  • Independent Writing : First five minutes of writing workshop will be dedicated to "silent time" where the Students are free to start  new piece in their writing notebook or continue working on a piece in progress. 
  • Partner Time : Students can turn to their assigned weekly writing buddy and share the piece that they are working on in their writers notebook. This can also be time dedicated for peer review.
  • Share : We will pick an "author of the week" who will share their favorite piece of writing from their writers notebook. They will add this piece of writing to their writer's portfolio. At the end of the school year student's will pick their favorite piece of writing from their portfolio and add it to the published class book.

  • Collecting Ideas: Discover what you want to say in your writing. (Ideas, organization, voice) 
  • Drafting: Get what you want to say on paper. (word choice, sentence fluency) 
  • Revising: Rework the text to see what works and does not work to make the piece clearer. (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency) 
  • Editing: Make the text readable. This is the time you go back and make conventional corrections to your piece. (conventions: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and paragraphing) 
  • Publishing: polish the final appearance of your writing piece. (presentation)

Culture is a social construct, NOT genetic. We plan to have many different resources (ex. diverse literature or family members as guest speakers) that students of one or many cultures can learn from or relate to. The term "funds of knowledge" co insides with culturally relevant pedagogy because it helps to maximize students learning through each students own knowledge and skills that they practice within their culture. 

    Throughout the entire school year, we strive to incorporate diverse practices that will expose students to all unique types of cultures in the world around us. It is important to help our students be knowledgable, gain insight, and accept different practices across cultures. Each student will be sent home with a blank page for our scrapbook.
