First: Include the first and last names of each member of your team. 1. List two things that the letter from Columbus to the King and Queen of Spain can tell us about him or his views on the land and/or people of the island he called Hispaniola. 2. What does the letter NOT tell us about Columbus? Think about what might be omitted in his letter.

He thought the land had value; he was asking the monarchs of Spain to ask if him and the rest of Spanish colonies if they could go on the search for gold. He thought that he has immediate rule over the native people and that they were easily exploitable. It doesn't give clarity on to how Columbus truly feels about the voyagers and colonies. It starts somewhat talking about the colonies but then transitions into gold more than about his thoughts on the colonists. Additionally, it doesn't tell us how Columbus thinks about the success of the colony as he never discusses how the island truly like.

He wanted to use the land as way to exploit the citizens.

Columbus directly appealed to being polite and confident with effective language to the King and Queen. Columbus did not write a lot about the native peoples. He was not showing his true intentions as he styled his address more like a report (reccomendations)

He seems to view the land/people as just an investment more focused on the gold and benefitting himself, he does not care about the past inhabitants as he talks about how he wants the Indians to convert. Views catholicism above any other religion and wants to take the land rather than explore it with his talks of advancement

2.) He does not share how much gold he actually already possesses or how much he knows is there just about how he wants to tax it. Also he does not mention about how much land the island actually has/how much he has built on it.

He was also focused on the economic side of the island, like farming and trading rather than the actual beauty of the island. Another interesting thing that he did when he showed up on the island is that he made all the Natives of the island "register" to each town, basically taking control of each aspect.

When Columbus showed up one thing that was possibly left out was being unable to communicate with the people of the island. As most people know, when Columbus showed up it was very violent, and not at all a peaceful transition as presented in the document.

Another detail that was left out is Columbus claims to be of Italian descent; although when he was from Genoa, he is of Spanish Sephardic Jewish descent.
