The piece “I am who I am” I choreographed evolves around the internal struggle people face because of being led by external factors. It explores how people feel the need to conform to be accepted in their society and therefore as a result their behaviours and feelings are influenced

Choreographic Choices

·At the start I have my dancers placed in a restricted area and spaces between them. This was to represent the message that people feel restricted by what they can do in order to try fit in with others.

·The movement at the start of the piece is slow with some quick steps but it is contained which draws the audience eye to a central focus point on the stage. The feeling is melancholy as they are reflecting on the internal struggle and desire to break free from social expectations. Whereas the last section is a repeat but this time it exudes a newfound sense of joy and confidence. They have embraced their true selves and its clear to see the joy and happiness felt as a result of being themselves.

·I have my dancers covering all the space in the last section which is to represent the freedom of being yourself and not following or being restricted by others.

·I also used a choreography task which involved a small square marked out on the floor. I used this technique to represent the judgements we make on people when we meet them for the first time. Almost like we have a checklist in our minds that we judge people against.

·I have my dancer’s creating movement based on what they feel about there thoughts so that the dance Is personal to them and its not just about my thoughts.

· Mirroring- The duet involves mirroring, where the two dancers are dancing in unison as if one is looking at her reflection in the mirror

· Lead and follow- represents the struggle, trying to fit in with society, and how society can control you and restrict who you are as result of wanting to be accepted.

· Formations- I have lots of different formations in the last section to create an energetic atmosphere.

· Lack of good studio space for rehearsals and double bookings. I had to hold some of the rehearsals in hallways. This resulted in lost time as the space was not big enough, I was having to mark the movement. This led to cutting rehearsal times and not being able to complete everything I had in plan.

· Choreography lecture being absent meant not receiving mentoring sessions or getting valuable feedback. Receiving feedback a week before the show was a challenge to make the changes and teach the moves in short amount of time available.

· Other assessments happening at same time involving my dancers made it difficult to plan rehearsals and coordinate all dancers being in one room at one time. I had to adapt my choreography from what I had originally planned due to who I had available and the time I had with them.

· I chose Dead in the Water instrumental version which sounds like white noise music. I chose this because I wanted something slow without lyrics as I wanted to create a sad and sombre atmosphere. To represent the internal struggle of hiding your true self and being something you’re not.

· My next choice of music False Confidence starts with a slow tempo but the music gradually builds with energy and intensity, the change in tempo really helps to accentuate the key moment of transition within the dance.

· t’s a song that reflects my narrative as its about believing in yourself and not taking yourself too seriously, so the lyrics align with both the emotions and theme of my choreography.

•	I feel really proud of the piece that I have created and feel I have clearly communicated the message I wanted to share with the audience in the piece.
•	I think my dance was entertaining and the audience would have followed the narrative and they would be able to personally relate to it in some way.
• If I was to do this again, I would try to secure studio space to allow more time in rehearsals to cover more material. Giving me the chance to go in deeper with my tasks and also give my dancers and myself more time to play around with movement to make sure we were getting the right movement for the right parts.
•	I also think it would have been beneficial to ask someone (another student) to come and watch my piece and give me feedback earlier on. This feedback would have allowed me to make any changes and allow time to practise rather than making changes last minute.

· Ellie solo should be longer they wanted to see more. I fixed this by extending the solo and using similar choreography used later in the piece, this links the sections. This will allow the audience to see more.

· Feedback to extend the False Confidence section of the dance as they enjoyed the upbeat and energetic movement. I have struggled to edit the music, to be able to extend it without it sounding like it was just repeating itself. So, I’m currently working on this to find an alternative solution.

· They liked a section where I had the dancers moving vertically as it was different, and they wanted to see that again. So, I’ve added the vertical line in again in the first section but with different movement.

· “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive” The narrative of my piece “I am who I am” examines the in-built discomfort that arises from the conflict between the desire to be your truly authentic self and the fear of judgement or rejection.

· Costume I plan to have my dancers all wearing brightly coloured shorts and white t shirts. The plain white t shirt symbolises the conforming to society whereas the bright coloured shorts symbolise fun and happiness felt as a result being able to be yourself.

· Lighting, The dance will open with white lights but on a dull setting so that it’s not bright. This is to match the emotion and mood of the start of the dance. Then as it goes onto the faster tempo music, I would like my lights to change to a brighter light to give that more fun brighter feeling. I haven’t decided which colour I would like yet for this section as I want to wait for my tech rehearsal to see which colour works best with costumes and stage.
