Britain passes the first of many taxes on the American Colonists. The Stamp Act imposes a tax on all legal documents, as well as  newspapers and advertisements, which takes a heavy toll on the colonists financially. In an attempt to assert their authority over the colonists, Britain passes a second series of laws. The Townshend Acts place a tax on imported goods such as paper, lead, glass, and tea. The colonists, already discontent with the Stamp Act, begin boycotting British goods. A deadly riot erupts as colonial protesters calling themselves "Patriots" cross the line with British soldiers. Protestors are driven to violence, throwing snowballs, bricks, and sticks at the authorities. Antagonized by the mob, British soldiers fire upon the crowd, killing five men and injuring three. This event, which would later be called a "massacre" by the media, helps to unite to colonists against British authority while creating a desire for independence. Furious with the events of the Boston Massacre and the rising taxes, the group known as the "Sons of Liberty" organizes a protest against Britain. During the night, colonists disguised as natives board the ships of the Boston harbor, and throw 342 chests of tea into the harbor. This serves as an act of defiance against Britian, as the tea was imported from the British East India Company. infuriated by the event of the Boston Tea Party, British Parliament passes the Coercive Acts to punish the colonists. These acts become known as the Intolerable Acts, as colonists begin to struggle from their enforcment. The Boston Harbor is closed, the colonial government is replaced with Crown appointed officials, and British soldiers are sent into colonial households. Britain and France fight for control over the Ohio River Valley and the fur trade market. Both British and colonial soldiers engage in combat with the French, along with native tribes of the area. The war ends in 1773 through the Treaty of Paris,  removing European rivals from the colonists' land, and expanding British territory in North America. Following the war Britain argues that by providing the colonists with protection, they owe them a great deal of debt, which must be paid back in taxes. Drained by the Intolerable Acts, colonial officials meet in secret to discuss a plan for the future of the colonies. Members of the meeting include George Washington, John and Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Jay, and John Dickinson. The assembly is also made up of deputies, each representing a colony. The group passes a compact among colonists to boycott British goods, while disregarding any hopes of true freedom under British Authority. instead they adopt the principles of natural rights and freedom.
