The quote is in a turning point in the book. This is important because Caswell and Melni learn about why and how their worlds are connected. From learning about the Conduit it leads them to do something that would not happen without learning of this. Learning of the Conduit also explains how Caswell and Alice got from Earth to Gartien. The Conduit also explains why there are so many similarities between the two worlds.

Book Review from Publishers Weekly

This massive brick of a science fiction thriller smashes The Bourne Identity together with The End of Eternity to create a thrilling action rampage that confirms Hough (the Dire Earth Cycle) as an important new voice in genre fiction . Peter Caswell, a cybernetically enhanced assassin from a futuristic Earth, and Melni Tavan, a deep-cover operative from a strange incarnation of the 1950s, are two deeply complicated and conflicted spies. Neither can complete their objectives without the other, and their superiors—and enemies—have hidden and often competing motives and plans. Melni and Peter frequently take turns narrating the story, allowing Hough to show off his prodigious linguistic imagination. Melni is a wonderful and nuanced character with precisely defined speech patterns, displaying a marvelous attention to detail, which reflects Hough’s worldbuilding. Peter’s narration, in contrast, occasionally feels stilted and artificial—perhaps appropriate for a cyborg—but that’s hardly enough to distract from Hough’s otherwise immersive prose. Both protagonists are racial minorities in their respective times and places, which influences but never overwhelms the suspense story. Hough’s longtime fans will be especially pleased that the bonus content includes “The Dire Earth,” a prequel novella to his debut, The Darwin Elevator . Agent: Sara Megibow, KT Literary. (Aug.) --Staff (Reviewed June 1 , 2015) (Publishers Weekly, vol 262, issue 22, p)

I agree and disagree with the book review. I agree with the way the writer talks about the style of the writing. Hough made it so you felt like you were there with the Caswell and Melni. I disagree with the fact that Caswell is a cyborg. For one he is never called a cyborg. Also in the end he gets the implant removed. The implant was also the only cyborg like thing in Caswell and is not needed for him to live at any point in the book.

Symbolic Image

The symbolic image in the book is the bottles that are turned around. In the book Caswell explains how he is assassinated 206 people at the beginning of the book . At the end of each mission for one person he turns around one bottle. Since he can't remember anything from any of his missions this help let him know what he has done. This would than lead him to go to a vacation book. He would flip to a page with the number of people he has killed and than go to that place. This was so he could practice for a mission in an unknown place. Then going to places like this is why he was chosen to the mission the book is about.

The setting really had big impact on the story. In the start and the end of the book they were in space. The fact that you float in a space ship had an impact on the fighting. This is because once you start moving you don't stop until you slow down which Melni had a harder time with. Also being on Earth or Gartien which had an impact on what Caswell could eat so he could use his implant.

Another quote is "His body suddenly spasmed, and then his eyes screwed shut as every neuron in his head flipped back to where it had been, two weeks earlier." (Hough 354) This is important to the story because no Caswell can't remember anything. The things that Laz told them changed what his mission is. From not remembering he does the wrong thing and kills Alice. This to a knew set of problems. Then Caswell and Melni need to do what Alice was doing.
