St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday in Ireland celebrated in honor of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, because he introduced Christianity to the country as a missionary around the 5th century. It is celebrated on March 17th. Despite being a religious holiday, it has also become a cultural celebration, observed not only in Ireland but also in countries with a strong Irish influence, such as the United States, which has a large Irish community.

St. Patrick’s Day has various symbols, but the most iconic is the three-leaf clover (shamrock). It is said that Saint Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Nowadays, in many places, it is also seen as a symbol of good luck.

After reviewing your speech, I share some comments:

To explain the relationship between language and the other relevant concepts by adding an essential construct: Identity. As far as I am concerned, identity is the concept that meets language, culture, and society in the same line and makes us wonder whether the identity we have is an individual construction or is part of the perception of the collective to which we belong.

In that sense, your speech allows us to understand that language is the mechanism that allows us to express and use our identity to live in communion with society, at the same time that society itself determines our role.

Some errors in grammar and pronunciation can be improved by practicing your speaking.

Thank you so much for your video.

Sincerely,

Juliana De Luque.

The development of this activity put me in context on several aspects, especially on the fact that, as foreign language teachers in training, it is necessary to be clear about the relationship between the subjects studied in the unit and the various methodologies and foreign language teaching strategies that we must use so that our future students can learn meaningfully through the recognition of the culture and identity that surrounds the language being studied.

In addition, the research on Irish culture shows the importance of knowing the historical and social background surrounding each cultural event, which at the same time accounts for how language allows the transmission of customs and traditions of the people, as well as makes us understand the social dynamics and the existing differences between these and many other cultures.

Sincerely,

Juliana De Luque.

The study of language is a complex phenomenon with different levels of abstraction. (Virginia lopez villega)

However, by getting to know a language we can learn about its culture, the environment that surrounds that community. It is surprising how various communities can speak the same language but behave differently. The functions of language in relation to social life are

The functions of language in relation to social life are:

Communication

Knowledge

Interaction

Identification

Manipulative

Lopez, V. Lenguaje y sociedad. pp (153-154)

Now with regard to Irish culture, we can affirm that it has had a lot of influence from its colonisers, for example St. Patrick's Day is a commemoration of the arrival of Christianity in this country, they see it as a saviour as it was considered that the beliefs they had before were pagan. The religion of the Celtiberians was of a polytheistic nature, which in my opinion was a beautiful culture with many cultural riches that had been passed down from generation to generation. Today St. Patrick's Day is celebrated to commemorate ‘the salvation of Ireland’ however it is now more of a festival activity than a religious one, although many older people still consider it to be more religious in nature.

Regards

Lina Maria Melo Muñoz

Language is not just a collection of words that exist for no reason; it has a background and history that make it understandable and communicative. It’s great that you highlighted this in your video because these are important points to emphasize.

I hope you have an excellent day,

Laura Milena Rueda García.

Language is not just a medium used for communication merely out of necessity; it has a social, cultural, and historical background that encompasses its entire existence up to the present day. In developing this activity, it can be noted that a fundamental part of a culture is its language. Although several countries may speak the same language, the reality is that their language and ways of communicating will vary, even in minimal ways, because language is created from the contexts provided by the society and culture in which it develops.

It must be understood that when learning a foreign language, this is not solely based on theoretical knowledge; it must also be put into practice. One should recognize that behind every word lies a historical and cultural connotation that gives it value in the present. Thus, it is not just about knowing how to translate but about internalizing and comprehending the information of the language.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Sincerely,

Laura Milena Rueda García.

Language and society are closely linked, since in order to understand the culture of a specific group, we must understand its language, since language guarantees communication only if it presents the necessary resources to express and communicate all the themes through all the information channels.

Social changes produce changes in language, which affect values in ways that have not been accurately understood. Language incorporates social values, but these values are only equal to linguistic values when society is stable and unchanging. Once society begins to change, linguistic change produces special effects.

Yisel Carvajal.

Hello Dear Laura!!

Your video is very interesting because you mention how language is an indispensable tool when identifying a culture and its ability to socialize, on the other hand, you talk about the importance of the importance of how language is part of our culture, how it represents us and how it interferes in the process of belonging to a social group, individually you recognize how it influences the way we communicate verbally and nonverbally since we opt for attitudes that express who we are and what society we come from.

Thanks for your video.

Yisel Carvajal.
