Here I share my video about what I have learned in Unit 1 about Language, culture, society, and identity.

St. Patrick’s Day has various symbols, but the most iconic is the three-leaf clover (shamrock). It is said that Saint Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Nowadays, in many places, it is also seen as a symbol of good luck.

Regarding your video, I have some comments:

• You show an interesting way of describing the relationship between language, culture, and society, by expressing some examples and assumptions proclaimed by authors of reviewed texts, which makes us understand a little bit more about how language is extremely linked to culture and people.

• Talking about the studies made by linguists and anthropologists in different environments gives us a real context to visualize how language serves to hand meaning to coexistence and its symbols allow people to express their perspective and their way of seeing life.

• There are a few errors in grammar and pronunciation that can be improved through speaking practice.

• To explain the relationship between language and the other relevant concepts by adding an essential construct: Identity. As far as I am concerned, identity is the concept that meets language, culture, and society in the same line and makes us wonder whether the identity we have is an individual construction or is part of the perception of the collective to which we belong.

• In that sense, your speech allows us to understand that language is the mechanism that allows us to express and use our identity to live in communion with society, at the same time that society itself determines our role.

• Some errors in grammar and pronunciation can be improved by practicing your speaking.

Now with regard to Irish culture, we can affirm that it has had a lot of influence from its colonisers, for example St. Patrick's Day is a commemoration of the arrival of Christianity in this country, they see it as a saviour as it was considered that the beliefs they had before were pagan. The religion of the Celtiberians was of a polytheistic nature, which in my opinion was a beautiful culture with many cultural riches that had been passed down from generation to generation. Today St. Patrick's Day is celebrated to commemorate ‘the salvation of Ireland’ however it is now more of a festival activity than a religious one, although many older people still consider it to be more religious in nature.

Language incorporates social values, but these values are only equal to linguistic values when society is stable and unchanging. Your video mentions a very important aspect when talking about the influence of language on society and people, how they are very much linked to norms, beliefs and ways of expressing themselves.

It is worth mentioning an important aspect that is not all people who speak the same language, share the same beliefs, for example in India they speak English but they do not have the same beliefs as Americans, this means that the language is shared but the culture is demarcated by the type of society in which it is found.
