Girls, by contrast, are encouraged more than boys to read for pleasure outside school. Eliot and others contend that it is this practice, rather than any genetic or hormonal difference, that best predicts gender differences in reading achievement.23 This socialization may also explain why boys tend to struggle in subjects like English, literature, and writing. Boys’ underachievement may be driven by stereotypes: what boys think it means to be a man is often at odds with succeeding in school. Clearly, socialization can be a powerful influence on academic success. p. 36

The high school students who said they had at least one teacher who made them feel excited about the future were more than four times more likely to be involved in and enthusiastic about school than those who did not. So there is so much more than a teacher shortage; there is an inspiring teacher shortage. p. 8

This will hopefully drive me to treat my students equally, encouraging each and every student to strive for learning no matter their gender.
3. I chose this quote because I strongly believe emotional intelligence plays a huge role in the everyday classroom. I plan to teach and encourage students to be aware, how to regulate, and how to address their ever changing emotions.

1. I chose this quote as teaching acceptance and bringing awareness to students is essential in them becoming functioning, socially productive members of society. If students are unable to be around people different from them, teachers should be making them aware and teaching them to be accepting. It should be integrated into all classrooms.
2. I picked this quote as it is important as an educator to understand the amount of students coming into the classroom that speak English as their second language or not at all. In the future I want to plan for this as all students should be afforded the opportunity to learn.
3. I chose this quote as it spoke to me. The ideals and ways teachers treat other people reflects onto the students. If a teacher is accepting and understanding the students will in turn learn to be as well. This quote shows me the actual impact teachers have on students even when they aren't trying.

As a teacher I hope to create with my students a culture of traditions and rituals that enhance their learning, social awareness, and confidence in themselves.
2. I chose this quote as it is something teachers may not think about; how many times they talk to their students and the impact of their words. With that many exchanges it may be hard for teachers to be aware of their impact of everything said, but they must strive to be.
3. I chose this quote as teachers should be aware of the dynamics outside the classroom that can effect all students. Students cannot learn if they are hungry, tired, have been injured at home, are neglected, etc. Teachers should be aware of this and plan for this to ensure all the students are healthy, safe, and able to learn.

I hope to one day serve my part in that.
3. I chose this quote as it is a topic of importance to me. I hope to one day teach in a school serving lower socioeconomic status students which as I have seen in Buffalo, is majority minority students. I feel as if more teacher candidates should be encouraged to teach in these schools as the students there are being racially isolated and they need better teachers.

I plan to work this into differentiated lessons in my future classroom.
3. I chose this quote as it is very impactful to the way I go about teaching in the future. This quote emphasizes that even those with a "knack" for teaching still need to hone in on their skill. To me, teaching is something I feel natural doing, but this quote allows for the insecurity of being "a natural" teacher or someone "born to teach" as each one of us is able to better our practice.

This is a fundamental idea that cannot always be assumed to be learned at home. Teachers are responsible for holding students accountable and teaching them the difference.
2. I chose this quote because I feel more teachers should implement the use of social media outlets to encourage and engage their students. I hope to one day implement social media like projects into my lessons as students would find them engaging.
3. I chose this quote because teachers are always being challenged to follow their moral compass. The students should be involved or greatly considered as they are the ones who will be doing the learning. I hope to collaborate with my students to figure out what works best for them in my future classroom.
2. I picked this quote as it is important to work with students to help them in all aspects of their learning. Early on, students are new to school and may not know how to seek the information they need in order to be successful. It is the teachers duty to model how to ask and formulate questions that are insightful and helpful.
3. I chose this quote as a reminder that even though another person's culture is different does not mean it is worse than my own. We tend to apply this to aspects of a culture that aren't driven in religion. All aspects of culture should be respected and not looked down upon.

As all students are different, their education must be as well. Every student deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment that is the most beneficial to them. I hope to remember this as a teacher, that if a child is not learning or adjusting well to a topic, they may need an alternative option.
2. I chose this quote as I believe expectation is a strong factor in a students success. With so much stigma around it, many have forgotten the original idea which, if successful, is a great thing for all students.
3. Without resources and a deteriorating unsafe environment students are not able to learn or benefit the same way wealthy students are.
2. This quote signifies the impact schools are run and how students can benefit from them even if the schools are in a poorer neighborhood. The way a school or class is run, no matter the lack of resources, can still encourage a student to learn and grow and allow them to be successful in their education.
3. I chose this quote because I believe the pressure for standardized test scores that teachers feel has hindered the teaching opportunities students need. There is no room in the curriculum to deter from topics that will influence test scores so teachers lack on the amount of hidden curriculum taught.
