An Overview of the Canadian banking system of the past.

This video was an overview of how money was created in Canada in collaboration of The Bank of Canada, Government of Canada, and Private Banks. It explains an overview of how government bonds turn into money for the citizens of Canada. The final part explains how this efficient method of an economy was used to steer our way away from The Great Depression, fund our country through wars, and used towards infrastructure. This video made me understand the theory of money a little better. Sort of an extension to the video about money earlier in the semester.

The main goals of The Bank of Canada.

This video emphasized on how the Bank of Canada has focused on keeping the inflation rate in Canada, low. They strive to keep the inflation rate at approximately 2% per year. There is also a brief explanation of policy interest rates and how it relates to inflation in our country. It also relates it back to Canadian citizens in relation to inflation. The Bank of Canada is the bank of choice for the Government of Canada. In the conclusion of the video a summary of Canada’s bank notes are brought up. I never truly knew much about the Bank of Canada, especially how they strive to keep the inflation rate at about 2% each year. As the video stated this is really useful for Canadians wanting to make investments.

America vs. Canada

As the title of the video states, this video shows the comparison of the American financial system and the Canadian financial system. A big factor that is discussed is financial regulation and being careful with money. He explains that the United States does have the power to create an economic system comparable to Canada but unfortunately for the banks having a hand in many things in the country, it’s basically impossible. I never really knew that much about the American Banking system. I've heard of the various forms of corruption but I never knew who really controlled a lot of the money circulation in the US.

This web link gives an overview as to why the Bank of Canada was established. The first paragraph explains prior to The Great Depression, Canada relied on private banks. Canada was still a relatively small and underdeveloped country by that time so it could manage the demands of the population and circulation of coins and large banks could still deal with the government. This all changed with The Great Depression, public outcry demanded for a revision of the banking system and thus the Bank of Canada was established.

This article gives an overview of the Big Five banks of Canada. The Big Five includes; the Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Montreal, and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. It shows how the Royal Bank of Canada has held consistently over the years that it is the top bank in Canada with $665 billion in assets. I never knew the National Bank of Canada was actually a top six, but due to the removal of branches and company problems it has been dropped from that list.

This website gave an overview of how banks in Canada are classified by schedules. Schedule one banks are those that are established in Canada, all the Big Five banks are considered a Schedule I bank. Schedule II banks are those that are affiliates of foreign banks and are regulated under the Bank Act just like schedule I banks. Examples include; Tangerine Bank, HSBC, and P.C. Financial. Schedule III banks are foreign banks permitted access to do business in Canada. They are not covered under the Bank Act, and operate under government regulation.
