Thought Provoking and Anecdotal:

Compares Gaby’s process of the project by feeling like a celebrity. She has been getting recognized by talk shows, the news, article writers, etc.

“For a moment, I understood just what it must be like to be a celebrity caught in the middle of a scandal.” For Gaby’s senior year project she had decided to fake her teen pregnancy which got lots of attention. News media and others followed her journey and requested interviews.

Setting/Imagery:

“My mother had to think about what time the baby had her last feeding, weather they had enough diapers in the house, and scheduling doctor visits for immunization and check ups.” Her mother was in middle school when she had her. Comparing her life to her moms is nothing like what her mom had to go through.

Character Description/Imagery

“My mom is a superhero. I know this because I’ve seen her in action, under the hood of a car that is probably better suited for the junkyard than the highway.” Her mom was very independent and learned things on her own. She started being more independent when she realized she was going to have to be more responsible that she was having a baby.

“Overnight I went from being just another unknown seventeen-year-old girl in small-town Washington State to an international media sensation.” Gaby was a normal girl in a small town before she had became the talk everywhere. Her senior project became to moment of fame for her.

Characterization/inner thoughts:

“When Good Morning America called my school looking for me while I was in the midst of juggling four other interviews, I ran out the back door crying.” This thought of Gaby showed her fear through becoming a new person. She was so overwhelmed and didn’t think it would turn out like this.

To start off the memoir Gaby talks about her mother and how she is so independent and learned how to be independent at such a young age. Her mother gained this independentness from her getting pregnant as a 14 year old teenager. Gaby references her mom as a "Superhero". "She learned how to fix cars by watching mechanic shows on television and by studying what other people did when they worked on their cars." Gaby used this as an example to prove that her mother learned how to do so many things. She used her mom as an example to do this project because her mom had told her everything. These eventually worked out and the project went through. In all, the dialogue given explained her idea of this project and that her life is nothing compared her what her mother went through at all.

In this paragraph, the Gabby explains her mom as gentle. Her mom grew up with a gentle women and became gentle. Gaby says "She had such little life experience and relationship experience; she didn't know what was normal and acceptable, and she didn't feel like she had a choice." Her mistake was ending up having a baby and a very young age and didn't mean for this to happen. Gaby's mom didn't know what to do at that age so she got more independent and got through the abuse and having a baby. She knew by having this baby that it would cost her life. Gaby is giving us these details to show how strong her mom is and that she was able to get through all of this.

Gaby fully started to get the effect of having a fake baby and starting her project. "I fitted around my abdomen, but the clay was too hard - not like a real pregnant belly would be." She explains how the clay wouldn't work so they had to get softer materials to make it more realistic. Gaby and her mom went to the store to get things to make the baby bump realistic. She was all set and got the right measurments. It was Gaby's first day in school with her bump. She says "I wanted to hide. It was exhausting to feel like people were judging me all day." She now feels that she doesn't think this project would be the best. It was so realistic to the point where she felt she really had a baby in her stomach. She was treated like she was pregnant from everyone in her school.

Gaby now got to see her friends real side of how they felt. She didn't feel comfortable at all around them. She thought they were talking behind her back at all times. Gaby says "I felt backstabbed. These people knew me, knew how hard I worked to have a real future." They didn't want anything to do with her after she was "pregnant". She felt as if she had no one to go to. It has built up to something that she thought wasn't going to be a big deal. This got to the point where she lost her friends. She never meant for that to happen. Gaby thought this was going to be a funny little project.

"I also hope that I can get through to the people who think its acceptable to ostracize pregnant teens and insult them for their mistakes." This memoir ends by her giving some advice to others who judge people about teen pregnancy. Some teens get pregnany which is weird for some people but they truly never meant for it to happen. People shouldn't criticize or make fun of them because of a mistake. It takes a lot of stress and courage for them to go through with it and they shouldn't have to go through what other people have to say.

Gaby started getting recognized for this and had many interviews. A lot of people looked at her differently now that she has gotten a lot of attention from reporters. "The rest of the day was like walking on air - so many people congratulating me, and telling me that they were touched by my project and thought I was very brave." This shows that people didn't care about her and thought it was weird when it had happened. Now that she has announced that is was fake, people were now talking to her saying how she is a very brave girl. It made her feel good so she ignored how other people felt before.
