Growing interest in Spain

Young people show growing interest in the sector in Spain - although many still lack the required practical and technical skills. Stronger alignment needed between education institutions and industry and increase in vocational education and training. Growing interest due to stability of the job opportunities within the sector. More people needed still -> need for collaboration

Linking territories and companies

Link between companies and territories needs to be created - typically companies are far from where young people live. Trade unions have a role in creating this link. Remote working helpful for increasing attractiveness but not enough.

Ageing populations

Lack of schools to meet training needs

Few schools to specialise in areas needed for field workers - need approx. 8,000 workers in field by 2028 but only 2 schools in Sweden and no plans to open new ones. Government disinterested in the discussion despite job opportunities in the sector and high unemployment rates. Expensive for companies to address this problem by themselves and address the skill shortages so they are unable to take on as many employees as they want despite having enough candidates. Tried to create connections with training institutes but too few that exist.

University partnerships

Partnerships with universities - e.g. adapting career paths and developing Master programme that feeds into a career path within endesa.

On-the-job training

Agreement to train student apprentices and specific class that would go to the company 1 day/week and, at the end of the school training, were employed by the company.

Lack of skills across EU

Government suggested utilising workers/skills from abroad to bring in talent from other countries but the skill shortages experienced on a national level also also experienced on an EU-level.

Programme co-design

Social partners can co-design programmes with industry. Early engagement - e.g. energy for the future brings the discussion to schools. Also Energy for grow - for young people. Involving students in final year of technical institute (120 hours integrated into the school curriculum to provide hands-on training)

Connect electricity sector to real-world context that young people care about (e.g. climate change) by bringing young people to energy plants, sending engineers to schools to discuss electricity sector (and raising awareness of women in the sector), meetings with young professionals to showcase available careers in the sector.
