The knees are generally solid, but may become hollow over time due to rotting. In cypress plantations, knees are found on trees as young as twelve years old. After that they can grow well in wetlands such as flooded areas, drains, and lakes. 

Cypress knees serve several purposes. They provide an extension of a tree to anchor it from washing away. They help protect against erosion by trapping sediment around the tree. They also help in aerating the trees roots just like a snorkel allowing oxygen down to the roots in stagnant low oxygenated conditions.
