- Strokes vary in the severity and subsequent in functional impact dependant on the extent of the neurological damage and potential recovery.
- Chronic symptoms include hemiparesis, balance deficits, mobility challenges, visual changes, sensory loss, cognitive deficits, speech disruption, fatigue and sensory processing problems.
- Symptoms can cause disruption to a patient’s performance of ADL’s including social participation, productivity and leisure.
- Bladder and bowel incontinence may also be caused as a result of a communication disorder, lack of awareness of body function, or emotional disorder.

(Wolf et al, 2014)

Margaret loves her garden, but may now struggle with this occupation with her low muscle tone. She also attends a regular book club, but this may be affected as she has a loss of left visual field in both eyes and difficulty concentrating.

As the potential impact may be long term, there is evidence that any Occupational Therapy intervention should continue for a period of time to maximise function and independence and minimise the potential impact on ongoing occupational performance.
(Morgans and Gething, 2002)
