Mayflower Discussion Question 3: Philbrick shows us that many of the classic images that shape our current view of the Pilgrims—from Plymouth Rock to the usual iconography of the first Thanksgiving—have been highly fictionalized. Why has America forsaken the truth about these times in exchange for a misleading and often somewhat hokey mythology? by Jason Brater

Thanksgiving is given a misleading story because nobody wants to remember everything our ancestors did wrong. We highlight the better accomplishments they made and morph the story to make them sound like better people. Americans don't want to be disappointed with the beginning of America, they want to feel proud. They don't want to hear that the Pilgrims survived because they stole corn from Indians or that half of Plymouth's population died over the first winter. Americans would much rather think of our ancestors as heroes.

Thanksgiving was given a false facade to how the actual event took place. America does not want have a day known for war or hate, so it is unsurprising that the actuality of what really happened was changed into something more happy. Americans want their children to remember the happier side of life, not a time when even a child were used as hostage in a feud between the Pilgrims and the Nausets. They want their children to remember the way that we made peace with the Natives and joined each other for a feast.

America has forsaken the truth about the Pilgrims because it was not convenient for us to remember the true story because it made the settlers look bad with how they treated the Indians in the area and the first Thanksgiving was also a misconception with the fact that there was no turkey or any of the other foods we normally eat on Thanksgiving and it was more similar to an English Harvest Festival in timing and food.

America has given us a false version of the first Thanksgiving because they wanted us to celebrate something happy. What actually happened during the first thanksgiving was not as great as people want to believe, America has decided that we should only focus on the good and non of the mistakes our ancestors made when creating our country. If people knew the truth they might not want to celebrate and spend money on Thanksgiving.

Historians tell most younger people in schools that the Pilgrims were all a bunch of happy people and lived happily with the Indians. This is false however as we know, the Pilgrims when first arriving in the New World stole food from the Indians and this did not make the Native population very happy , they narrowly survived the winter with half the population dying. Most school teachers probably don't tell young children of these truths most likely to "turn them into better nationalists" as most people would like to think of our ancestors as being heroes not thieves.
