The work is much bearable for Ferdinand because  he thinks of his labor as servitude to the woman he loves (Miranda). Throughout this scene, we can see that Ferdinand is smitten by love and Miranda's beauty. Miranda being a kind soul that she is, proposes that Ferdinand should take a break from working so hard while she helps him carry the wood. Ferdinand being such a gentleman blatantly refuses but rests for a while talking with Miranda and even gets to know her name in the process.  

     The scene also shows us Prospero's admiration of his matchmaking skills in regards to the couple's love life. Ferdinand assures Miranda that he is the prince of Naples and probably a king now, though he prays his father is not dead. We see that Miranda is not after material things or fame; rather, she seems unconcerned with Ferdinand’s Royal title and asks for his unconditional love.  Ferdinand replies enthusiastically saying that he loves her with his whole heart and promises to cherish her forever. His well-crafted response makes Miranda propose marriage and Ferdinand excitedly accepts the offer. 

     In the sidelines, we see Prospero filled with joy knowing his matchmaking plans have worked. Ferdinand is in service to Prospero, but in an attempt to make carrying logs more bearable he sees Miranda as his taskmaster. The word “slavery” is used often in this scene. However, Caliban is repeatedly called a slave to both Prospero and his anger. We see that on the other hand, Ferdinand is gladly willing to be a slave to love. 

    At the end of the scene, Miranda takes up the theme of servitude when she proposes to Ferdinand and vows to die his maid, devoted to him even if he refuses to marry her.  This is the only scene where Ferdinand and Miranda actually interact in a one-on-one manner, and this is in an attempt to portray Miranda as having a mind of her own and not just her father's puppet. It also portrays her naivety to be in love with the first man from the actual world that she sees. 

     Shakespeare shows Ferdinand in a kind of servitude where he must physically humble himself which contrasts his Royalty status. There is also another kind of servitude talked about in this scene where both Miranda and Ferdinand are willing to give themselves wholly to each other.  Prospero remaining behind the scenes without interfering helps the audience trust this meeting between the lovers more than their first meeting in Act I, scene ii. However, Prospero's presence might also suggest that he has some control over Miranda's actions and speech.

     The love between Miranda and Ferdinand is also significant because they are both heir's to their father's thrones ( Alonso and Prospero) and this is in a bid of reconciliation between their fathers.
