Once the people have gathered, the priests, ministers, altar boysdeacons and the lectorn walk in procession to the altar. A cross is held high by an altar boy, the book of Gospels is carried by the lectorn and sometimes a priest dispenses incense. As the sacred group walks to the altar, the congregation sings the entrance chant. This unites the community of the faithful and prepares us for the celebration of Christ. Those in the procession bow or genuflect at the altar and the priest and deacons kiss the altar in veneration.

The congregation is asked to silently think of our sins so that they may be forgiven. After the self-reflection, the priest says, "May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life." This is called the absolution prayer.
