- The black button eyes represent the restriction that the other mother wants to limit Coraline’s freedom and away from her biological parents. The other mother’s world wears button eyes instead of real eyes. Also for the movie Alice in Wonderland, the unfairness and illogicality of the Queen and the King make Alice feel uncomfortable and want to come back to her ordinary life. 

- The secret doors represent imagination for both movies, the world that the main character wants to be. The imaginary world would have anything that they want that their real world would not have for them. 

- The magical world in Coraline represents the life that she wants, she is not being left out in that other world. Also, in Alice in Wonderland, Alice in her real world she seems bored and daydreaming, not listening to other advices. The "Wonderland" seems attracted to her and makes her stay there. 

- The rats are the one who led Coraline to the secret door and are the same as the White Rabbit who directed her through the door.

Coraline started with a cloudy day which set a signature eerie and creepy mood. While Alice in Wonderland (2009) began with a scenery in the forest on a sunny day, which set a bright and peaceful mood. On the other hand, they are quite similar in the plot structure. For example, in the beginning, both the protagonists start with being bored of their real world and go on an adventure in their own little world. Like Coraline goes around the new neighborhood and finds Alice lying in the forest and imagining being in a magical world. The same with the ending of the two stories, they have the same plot structure where the protagonists face their final battle, try to escape the other world, and successfully come back. In the story of Coraline, she crawls through the tunnel, then closes the door to escape to the old world after able to save her parents, which shows that everything Coraline has experienced might be real and not imaginary. Meanwhile, in Alice in Wonderland (2009), she escapes away from the Queen until she also runs into a door, but instead of opening to the old world, it talks to her and tells her that the other world is just a dream. This directly shows that Alice's other world is from her imagination and might not be real.

Same as Coraline, when I was around middle school, I was much more active and excited to go outside of my house. Whether it was going to the park, a store nearby, or just walking around with the dog and cousins, I would take every opportunity of free time to do so. So at the beginning of the film, when Coraline immediately goes outside and adventures around the neighborhood after her family finished moving in, even though the weather has the potential to rain. This shows how carefree she is to not give thought to the weather and a new environment, because she, simply, is just excited to explore around. This specific scene reminds me of the time when I also first moved to a new house. When my family finished unpacking, my cousins and I immediately ran to the big park nearby that we heard from our uncle. We were all curious about it, then when we arrived, the four of us stayed there until the sky was pitch black.

In the beginning of Coraline, the movie established that Coraline was going to be the protagonist through her personality, adventurous, and color theme of bright yellow and dark blue, which made her stand out from all the others. But one of the elements that make her on the good side is her courage and bravery in the battles. Especially the last battle with the Other Mother, knowing that she could potentially be stuck in the Other World forever, she is still determined to go back to save the spirits and her real parents. This battle also shows that the Other Mother is on the bad side. Beside her dark color theme, her scheming and manipulation to others make her evil. Similar to Coraline, Alice in Wonderland, Alice is determined to be the good through her innocent, dreamy, curious, and adventurous personality. The theme shows more when Alice faces the Queen. She is never content with just doing the bare minimum and often seeks out random things to fill the space. Coraline's parents are busy with work and I understand her point of view because before covid my parents would work from early morning to almost dinner. Her thoughts about whybe is a reflection of her mind. She is not a very trusting person unless they show her why they are. Growing up I had small inner circle friend groups because trust was a very big thing I focused on. Coraline and the cat showed her dependence even when she shows that she doesn't need anyone. So, the movie really has a connection with me. In addition, the imagination world can be a symbol that connects me and Coraline together. We both want our parents to listen and care for us.
