Music in The Great Gatsby is essential. Since the novel takes place during the Jazz Age, an era in which Jazz music and dancing replaced traditional music genres, there are many jazz tunes mentioned in the novel. The songs have certain moods to them, and when introduced in the novel, whatever is going on matches that mood. Whether its a fast swing during one of Gatsby's parties, or a blues when Jordan and Nick are driving through the streets of the city, there are plenty of great jazz songs throughout the novel.

Three O'clock in the Morning by: Paul Whiteman

This song is a slow waltz written by Paul Whiteman. This song is mentioned in the novel when Jordan and Nick are driving through the city. "Three O'Clock in the Morning' a neat, sad little waltz of that year " (Fitzgerald,116) This song creates a nostalgic feeling. Nick in this scene is dreaming of how life would be for Gatsby without his obsession with Daisy, and this song almost creates a dreamy effect.
https://youtu.be/HB_iZrAMfp0

Candy Paint by Post Malone has a similar effect as Three O'clock in the Morning by Paul Whiteman. The beat has a dreamy feel and seems almost nostalgic. One line in the song, " Even though my final form ain't unlocked" reminds me of my childhood and my love of video games. The nostalgic feel is why it reminds me of Three O'clock in the Morning.

A verse from the song is located on pg. 78 when Jordan and Nick are driving through New York and she has just told him how Gatsby and Daisy used to date, and that Gatsby moved to Long Island in hopes of seeing her. The song is upbeat and makes you want to dance. "Your love belongs to me" is a lyric from the song. This relates to the feeling that Gatsby feels toward Daisy. The upbeat mood of the song can also portray Gatsby's ambition to obtain Daisy's love.
https://youtu.be/NOergMpEPzY

Just The Way You Are by: Bruno Mars

Just the way you are is a perfect song that matches the upbeat feel of The Sheik of Araby. Bruno Mars creates the perfect upbeat mood for his hit love song Just The Way You Are, and if The Great Gatsby was written in modern times, this song would definitely be featured. "'Cause when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while.." is a lyric from the song and perfectly relates to how people see Daisy. Even Nick Carroway can't help noticing her beauty

Ain't We Got Fun by: Van & Schenck

Ain't We Got Fun is a happy tune that could cheer you up no matter how sad you were. This song shows up in the novel on pg. 95 when Gatsby tells Kilpsinger to play it on the piano the first time Daisy is over at his house. This song perfectly matches the mood of that scene. All of Gatsby's windows were open and the sunshine was pouring in on them."Times are so bad and getting badder, Still we have fun." This lyric from the song relates to the tragedies about to take place in the novel, but Gatsby intends to live up his time with Daisy.
https://youtu.be/y041-eT6QrI

We Are Young by: Fun.

This song almost exactly matches the mood of Ain't We Got Fun. Although it's a little slower than the hit jazz tune, it has the same theme of bad times becoming good because of a significant other. "Tonight, We are young". This lyric relates to Gatsby and Daisy reliving the days they had together before fought in WW1. The speed up in the beat and reminiscent vibe would fit perfectly in this scene of the book.
