Year 11 History AOS2 by Hannah Terry

While the 1920s was characterised by material progress, increased personal freedoms and unprecedented economic growth, the Great Depression brought hardship. The creative arts both reflected and challenged social life and change in this period where mass entertainment and information by means of radio and film became widespread.

The early twentieth century saw huge changes in the modes and meanings of artistic production, as many movements and countries re-evaluated aesthetics, technique, color, media, meaning, and many other aspects of art.

The Impressionists at the end of the 19th century, who championed landscape painting and revolutionized technique and the use of color, helped to open the floodgates for the movements that would evolve in the early 20th century. These, in turn, mirrored the economic and social changes occurring throughout Europe at the time.

The first two decades of the 20th century were marked by enormous industrial, economic, social and cultural change. International trade brought with it increasing growth and prosperity, along with a rise in poverty and slums in major cities. Urbanization, architectural advances, increases in technology and the spread of goods and information were markers of the times. Competition between nations was reflected in attempts to show off advances in technology, business, and architecture, among other things. Advances in science included Einstein's Theory of Relativity and Freud's development of modern psychology.

The very first camera capable of capturing motion was invented late in the 1890s, though it could only record in black and white (like all other cameras at the time) and could not record audio. To compensate for the lack of sound, the films were manually edited to include frames with dialogue as text after each character spoke in the film. At first, films were very short — usually under a minute long — and seen by most simply as a novelty. One of the very first “films” produced and screened was a shot of a steam train pulling into a station. It’s duration was about half a minute, but the famous story behind it is that because the viewers had never seen film before, they reflexively ducked and screamed as the train appeared to approach them.

Most entertainment industries believed that the hype about films wouldn’t sustain itself and eventually die down, like many other inventions had done. However in about ten years time, film had become one of the largest industries in entertainment. Film studios were being built as early as 1897. The form of visual entertainment had progressed somewhat, now being several minutes long and including several shots and scenes.

As the popularity of films increased, it allowed producers to have a larger budget when shooting. This lead to special effects, more actors, and generally higher quality productions. They could even hire artists to manually paint in colours onto the film frames!

The art of film had developed significantly in just the first decade of invention. Actors began appearing in the credits of the features, as opposed to just the writers, directors, and producers. In Australia in 1905, the first “feature length” film (over an hour long) was being shown in theatres and was spread across multiple film reels. Soon an early permanent theatre showing only films was constructed, under a name that may be familiar, “The Nickelodeon”. It was called this because at the time it cost 5 cents, or a “nickel” to view a film.

The 20th century ushered in a change from handcrafting to machine tooling. Henry Ford introduced one of the first moving assembly lines as a way to turn out more cars more quickly, and the emerging auto industry popularized this mode.

Automation and mechanization also changed agricultural practices. The combined traction steam harvester built by Stockton J. Barry on his California ranch was one of the machines that changed the way produce was harvested. Mechanized canning changed the way fruit and vegetables were processed and preserved, and made out-of-season produce available year round.

As workers nationwide adjusted to an increasingly mechanized workplace, good working conditions took on new importance. Workers in several industries formed unions to promote safer working conditions and limit maximum working hours.

As the first two decades of the 20th century passed, the nation saw increased immigration from both Europe and Asia, as well as increased activism by African Americans, American Indians, and others who demanded equal opportunities and the end of discriminatory laws and customs. World War I was a watershed in these movements, as both African Americans and American Indians enlisted in the army. Blacks served in segregated units, but Indians did not. Indians had a highly ambivalent attitude about their senses of belonging to the American nation; after all, they belonged to tribal nations as well, nations which had long histories of government-to-government relations with the United States. Yet by 1918, the federal government had done a good deal to not only destroy Indian lives but to destroy that government-to-government relationship as well. Many Indians were resentful of these policies, but chose to join the military anyway. Why? Veterans have offered many reasons, one of which is that they believed that when America was threatened, their homelands were threatened. Many veterans saw themselves as warriors not only for their own tribal communities but for the U.S. as well. Despite their service alongside whites, there is no doubt that Indians experienced a high degree of discrimination in the military, as sensitively shown by Joseph Boyden in the novel Three Day Road. Both Indians and blacks sacrificed for the United States and felt that the country ought to treat them more fairly.
