In the story, the protagonist is an American Indian named Jackson Jackson who is trying to get his Grandmother’s stolen regalia back from a pawnbroker at a pawnshop. Still, the pawnbroker claims he brought it for one thousand dollars and states that he didn’t know it was stolen. So, the pawnbroker couldn’t give back the regalia to Jackson for free knowing he spent one thousand dollars on it. That’s when the pawnbroker suggested that Jackson should just pay him one thousand dollars for his Grandmother’s stolen regalia back that way everything would be fine. So, the pawnbroker gave him twenty-four hours to get the money he needed to get his Grandmother’s stolen regalia back. Thus, Jackson started his mission to get one thousand dollars and buy back his Grandmother’s stolen regalia. This is where he experienced and interacted with many people throughout his journey like winning the lottery and getting drunk at an all-Indian bar where he met a woman named Irene who he encountered at the bar. Then he would eventually get kicked out when it was closing time. After that he would get arrested by Officer Williams, who he mentions “was a good cop with a sweet tooth” (Alexie 21). Once Jackson was arrested, Officer Williams decided to let go of Jackson after talking to him about the situation he was in with trying to buy back his Grandmother’s stolen regalia as well as giving him thirty dollars so he would be able to buy back. And when he was released he used the thirty dollars that Officer Williams gave him to buy a meal for himself and three Aleut. Finally, he returns to the pawn shop hoping the pawnbroker would forget about the money he was supposed to bring to him, but the pawnbroker just gave him his Grandmother’s regalia back for five dollars.
