Throughout our COGmas 2025 period most of our children have been keen to engage in a variety of experiences, in particular they were excited to learn the festive feelings song, meet the characters and discover what was in each box. Our 'happy' emotions story was 'Santas Socks' whilst our 'not so nice emotion' story was 'The Christmas Show'. Together we have explored the Christmas Story where the use of amazing emotional literacy was used to describe the characters. One child told me "Mary must've been so hot and sweaty, she's tired" whilst another said "I would be so confused if my hotel was full".

The use of props & real life images played a huge part in our experiences.

Thank you so much for another year of COGmas inspiration & magic.

At Hazlehead ELC we have been exploring our festive feelings through stories, crafts, songs, musical instruments, dancing and playing games. In particular the children went on a trip to a local forest to choose a Christmas tree for the nursery. Whilst there, the children expressed how excited they were feeling. The children used their senses as they smelt the bark, felt the pine needles and felt warm and cosy drinking their hot chocolate. The children continued to talk about their feelings of happiness and excitement as they decorated the Christmas tree together back at our setting.

Staff have been using Emotion Works to talk about all areas of Christmas. We have been taking part in lots of the Cogmas activities and creating our own to fit in with the emotional needs of our class. Children have shown lots of curiosity and excitement when the box is brought out and have been extending their emotional vocabulary by thinking of different words to discuss their feelings. We have had a big focus around the Nativity talking about each character and how the miracle of the Christmas story effected their emotional Wellbeing. The impact of this has been that the children are now thinking more about how others feel and how situations can effect peoples emotions and behaviours.

We are mainly an EAL setting and a lot of the children, initially, were only able to identify an emotion as being happy or sad. Now they will say that they are excited, angry etc. The children also enjoyed joining in and singing the 'festive feelings' song and tapping on the box to find out what was inside.

We are a supported class with 8 pupils, all pre verbal, working between milestones and pre early levels. We have enjoyed opening the cogmas box to see what it has brought us each time and exploring the different emotions linked to the festive season. We particularly enjoyed the more tactile activities such as props, decorations, playdough faces and making our own snowmen. One of our pupils has begun pointing at the emotion symbols on the wall while using some of the Makaton signs for them which is a huge step for them. I adapted a lot of the supplied activities to make them a bit more hands on and tactile for our learners this helped grab their attention and engage them for a bit longer. Thank you.
