Legacy- Edmund Burke

One of the legacies from the French rev. was Edmund Burke. Burke was a member of the Parliament. Not many people liked him during the French rev because he sided with the Americans in the revolt against the British. He argued that the government in France was the blame for the revolution. He offered the first defense of conservative principles to the Government. He believed that gradual change would be effective rather than just changing everything at once.

Thomas Paine insisted that a strong government depended on establishing a constitution that would give men equal and natural rights. Paine became so popular that he was elected to the National Convention in France. The ironic thing is that he did not speak French, however.

This woman was one of the few feminists that spoke out in the French Revolution. She wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792. In that book she argued how women should have the same rights as men. This included women earning an education. This of course started a lot of controversy because men at this time didn't believe women should have the same rights as them.

The states had just won their freedom from Britain and were in the process of having their declaration ratified at this time in history. The Americans followed the French rev intensely because they saw extreme similarities in their revolution as with France's. For example, the French's Declaration seemed to look an awful lot like the Bill of Rights. They were also coming up with the idea of having republicans and democrats like the Americans. This might have ended badly because because conflict over land and boarders between America and France arose.

Effect- new ideology

The French rev "gave birth" to a new idea of ideologies. The word even started being used during the French Rev. The revolutionaries had established a republic but other ideologies included nationalism, liberalism, socialism, and even communism. In the second part of the reading, it even states, "as a result of, or in reaction to, the French Revolution," talking about these different ideologies. Most of these ideologies were often connected. Nationalism began in France during the rev and eventually spread to the rest of Europe. National liberation was one of the largest themes or topics during the 19th and 20th centuries. Nationalists would be the ones who favored a monarchy or republic. There were a lot of socialist and liberals as well. One well known socialist was Charles Fourier. On the other hand, Socialists had a more uplifting view towards the rev. In fact, the socialists and communists believed that the war hadn't gone far enough!

The power of the churches was greatly shifted. They had little to no power when it came to government anymore. The only people that really still looked to the Church, and to God, were the poor class because they had no other hope. The revolution had started a degree of religious oppression. Philosophers, such as Joseph de Maistre, were becoming much more popular too.

Not only did the French rev have a lasting effect on obviously France itself, but it also spread to many other countries. One example of this would be the Napoleonic era in Spain. This was the spark that even led to the independence movement in Latin America. Revolutions in Asia were also aided by the French's ideas. Some Asian countries were aroused by the idea of nationalism as well as the ideas of revolutions of both the society and their state.

A lot of great European writers came out of the French rev. Some of these writers included Honore de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Anatole France, and even Charles Dickens, whom we still study today. By these people writing about the events of the French rev, it kept the ideas, people, and event alive for several generations afterwards. This literature even sparked the new trend of cinema because of their vivid imagery. Lastly, some of the greatest films in world history have focused on the revolutionary time period of France.
