Mr Shanmugam’s kampong was a multiethnic one. He said that the situation then was completely different from now as “at that time, we were culturally the same thing, Indians, Chinese, Malays. No distinguishing.” In fact, it was the hard times that acted as a bond for the people. They had to stand together as one and help each other."

(78 words)

"What I want to say is that I really enjoyed my school days and I think that's very important that students should enjoy their school days. It wasn't, in those days, there wasn't that pressure on us and the teaching was good. Most of the teachers were Indians largely. There were in Muar, perhaps one or two Chinese teachers and one or two Malay teachers... One thing that I do remember with some amusement is that I wasn't very good at physical activity and I'm still not good at physical activity. But it's... we used to have what they called the drill periods, half an hour or 45 minutes when we went out... So I dreaded it.”

Later, he worked as a car washer for the Japanese. He told that he was not disturbed by the Japanese and was given food or money as his pay. He also mentioned that the Japanese did not disturb his family or him. Their attitude was that as long as you are good to them they would be good to you. However, Mr. Kuppusamy did mention that the Japanese forced all children to go to school. The Japanese tried to influence the school children to become patriotic towards Japan by making them to sing Japan’s national anthem.

The relationship between races, studying environment, accessible foods and the amount responsibility shouldered by teenagers have changed drastically due to the Japanese Occupation.

In 1822, different races resided in different parts of Singapore. However, during the Japanese Occupation, different races not only lived together but also worked together to survive. Before 1942, they couldn’t interact with each other and knew very little about their counterparts but during the war, they learnt more about each other and relationships improved.
Before the war, the studying environment was less stressful and restrictive. However, during the Japanese Occupation, it was the exact opposite. Students were struggling to learn the Japanese Language. It was hard due to the switch in language. If they communicate with the Japanese and were to make a mistake when talking, the Japanese might punish them as they will view it as an insult made towards their national language.
In 1925, post-war, the Polar Café opened and was frequently visited by many teenagers. However during the Japanese Occupation, many people starved due to the scarce food supply. Some resorted to eating less so as to increase their budget for the next day. However, some died due to the lack of food intake.
In 1932, most students had no jobs. During the Japanese Occupation, however, many teenagers had to take on extra jobs as their families could not even afford daily necessities. Some even need sacrifice their education in order to get more jobs to earn more money.

Therefore, from all our points listed, we can conclude that the lives of teenagers have indeed changed drastically because of the Japanese Occupation.
