The cartoonist is trying to illustrate how boring and unoriginal the debates are. Most Americans do not watch the debates for that reason, most canidates say and talk about the same scripted issues over and over again making the debates no interesting. The debates are really only of value to those who watch the debate. Even then they might only be of value if a voter is undecided. The cartoonist is saying that a lot of voters would rather watch a show than the debate.

A lot of similar points are made between all of the debates and many people would prefer to spend their time doing something else than watching a debate.

The debates are really important because even for the people that do watch them, it gives them an effective way to see the candidates' sides.

The voter's interest has not been grasped yet, which is causing the voter to turn to something other than the election. In this case, he found the debate so boring that he would rather watch a TV show.

3. I think that most Americans don't view debates because ever single debate is the same. All of the candidates are trying for the same exact things, and are basically repeating themselces. They are not assessing the issues that the voters want to talk about, and they are not engaging the audience.

4. A debate is important because a lot of voters are undecided. These undecided voters are looking to the debate in order to see who would be the best candidate for them. It is almost like a contest for the candidates, trying to win over the most voters.
