Hades fell in love with Persephone, the daughter of his sister Demeter. One day when Persephone was gathering flowers in a field Hades left the underworld and kidnapped her. Hades made Persephone his bride, and let her rule the underworld with him. At first Persephone hated the underworld, but grew to love it and Hades. Demeter was distraught at her daughters kidnapping and made it impossible for any crops to grow on earth. People tried to convince Demeter that Persephone was happy and to let the crops grow again, but she wouldn't let anything grow until Persephone returned. Persephone knew to eat nothing because she would be forced to stay in the underworld, but one day was so hungry ate six pomegranate seeds. Zeus had a meeting with all the gods and made a deal with Hades and Demeter. Persephone would stay with Hades for six months while her mother mourned, and would go to earth for the other six months to help her mother tend the crops.
