At this point Teacake and Janie sat in their house trying to wait out the storm while Motor Boat slept in the next room. The significance is that Janies good times and bad are all predetermined by God. So here they are sitting in the dark waiting for God to make his next move. They are surrounded by a literal storm, yet still she is focused on what triumph or tragedy will amount from all of this. In a way they are silent beggars, when I imagined the scene playing out in real time I imagined a puppy eyed couple, together hoping for a savior, to come rescue them from a storm. Hoping to be rescued from emotional and physical hurricanes whisking them about.

What was happening during this point in the chapter was that the characters were huddled together, pressed against the walls witnessing absolute destruction and awesome power of God from the hurricane. It caused complete terror within them watching trees and other objects being thrown around like toys, "Through the screaming wind they heard things crashing and things hurtling and dashing with unbelievable velocity" (159). The meaning of "There eyes were watching God" (160) was meaning they were watching the might of God in contrast to their own weakness.

This quote was said during the hurricane that hit the everglades. Most people fled the storm from the warnings of the Indians but Tea Cake, Janie, and some others decided to wait out the storm. During this time of waiting out the storm, the narrator stated, "They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God"(160). This quote means they were watching the dark storm but they their eyes were watching God for hope.

When all of the lights went out because of the storm, the people were left there sitting in the dark staring at nothing except for the darkness. They could see nothing but they seemed to finally realize the power of god as they sat there and though they could see nothing at all they seems to truly witness the little power they really possessed in the world. One small person seems infinitesimal in the world as if their power is unmatched by that of the rest of the power out there. They are waiting there for anything to save them and they are looking to god for help since they are completely helpless.
