Repeated Readings: A repeated reading is when a student reads a passage over and over until the reading has no errors and increased speed. This strategy develops fluency, confidence, word call practice, and builds comprehension.
As a teacher for students with special needs, repeated readings help build confidence and gives the reading practice my students need to increase their reading skills. My students read through a passage once with a highlighter, highlighting words they do not know. Then they read through the passage out loud getting prompts and assistance to apply decoding skills. They time each other for one minute and then graph their scores on a chart. In days to follow, students practice the passage and continue to time each other.
(Cox, 2013) at: https://www.thoughtco.com/developing-fluency-with-repeated-reading-2081398 states that short passages with 50-200 words works best. My students are motivated when they see their scores increase and they enjoy timing each other and encouraging one another to go higher. I always stress that we only compare ourselves to our own score and no one else's
