The stamp act taxed almost all printed materials. You needed a stamp to show that the tax had been paid.

Why did the British pass it? British did not have enough money to pay back the debt, so they taxed the colonists.

How did the colonists react?The stamp act angered the colonists because they thought only their own assemblies could tax them. King George III made the Proclamation of 1763 to not allow colonists to live west of the Appalachian Mountains, on Native American land.

Why did the British pass it? It helped keep peace between Native Americans and settlers. It also kept colonists by the Atlantic Coast, where British authority was stronger and it enabled Britain to control westward expansion and the fur trade in the region.

 In 1767 Parliament passed the Townshend Acts to tax imported goods, such as glass, tea, and paper. The taxes were paid when the goods arrived, not when they were inside the colonies.

Why did the British pass it?
The British passed this act because they were trying to pay off debt from the French and Indian war.

Why did the British pass it?
 The British passed this act because they couldn't afford barracks and needed to house the soldiers. So, the British turned to the colonists. 

How did the colonists react?
