"A Critical Interpretive Synthesis of the Literature Linking Music and Adolescent Mental Health." Youth & Society 48.4 (2016): 521-38. Web. 18 Mar. 2019.

This article dives into the correlation between music, and its impact on mental health during adolescence (ages 10-24). These studies look at the trends in more negative behavior among teens who have a preference in music. For example, studies show that teens who grew up listening to heavier music were more likely to show signs of isolation and anomie (not fitting in), where as teens who grew up listening to mainstream music were more likely to experience stress and anxiety around social issues.

Depression among teens is claimed to be correlated with listening to negative themed music (526) and has resulted in a method of coping through disengagement via music listening. Females were also found to be impacted more with emotional avoidance than males in music.
