The 2-person tents are represented by "x" and the 4-person tents are represented by "y." Then we multiplied the equation (x+y=60) by negative two so that we'd be able to get one of the variables by themselves. After subtracting the two equations we got 2y=82 and from there it was just a two step equation in order to solve for y, and we divided both sides by two, as shown below to get y=41. Finally, we plugged in y=41 into the first equation to get x+41=60 and from here it was also just a two step equation.
