According to the Mandate of Heaven, the emperor should be a benevolent ruler, preferably a wise Confucian that avoids extravagance in personal behavior. If he does not behave in this manner, divine intervention will conveniently remove him from the dynasty. This way of thinking in early China was used to explain the changing of dynasties; the Shang Dynasty was supposedly ended because the emperor misbehaved by roasting and eating opponents.

With Confucianism being a large part of the Mandate of Heaven, essential to the emperor's behavior, it in turn is a large part of Chinese society. In an ideal society, the emperor should be the greatest Junzi, the most superior man in the dynasty, and the rest of society should strive to be Junzi. Being a Junzi involves studying history, poetry, and paintings in order to understand and appreciate beauty. It also involves having the Confucian concepts of Ren and Li. Ren, translated as propriety, requires a person to always behave in the most proper manner, no matter the circumstances. An understanding of what moral action to take, in relation to the Five Relationships (Ruler to Ruled, Father to Son, Husband to Wife, Elder Brother to Younger Brother, and Friend to Friend) in Chinese society, is needed for Ren. Li, translated as ritual, requires the veneration of ancestors through rituals. Confucian principles permeate through much of Chinese society, from the emperor to the peasants.

Confucius developed ideas that made people more respectful and it created a social hierarchy. In the Junzi, sons were expected to respect their fathers, also known as the "filial piety" which was a teaching of Confucius. In the time of Ren and Li, people were ranked above or below each other in social classes, but respect was still an expectation. People were expected to know their place in society. Confucian teachings gave China a well functioning society and it established a foundation for government and education.
