Describe your Picture
 : Above is a picture
of a sari with jeans. Sari representing my Indian roots (born in India) and
Jeans representing adapted Canadian culture (moving to Canada at the age of 8)

What is Happening in your picture : This picture would be the best depiction of my identity as an indo Canadian woman. Since,I am a blend of both cultures. I have tried to explain the blending of both cultures through clothing and accessories. Indian wear would be sari and bangles.Canadian would be a jean.

Why did you take a picture Of this : I took this picture to represent my identity. My identity is an essential part of me. This picture gives justice to me being Indo – Canadian women. As clothing
represents ones identity. Traditional Indian clothing such as Sari, bangles, would be a part of me staying intact to Indian culture. Jeans would represent everyday wear of Canadian women. This picture was the best I could think of representing two important elements that make up my identity.

What does this picture Tell us about your understanding or beliefs about Citizenship/Identity today : I feel that I am close to both cultures When I dress up in a sari to attend Indian function. I completely feel Indian. As sari is a traditional clothing of Indian women and accessories bangles, bindi are also part of it.
Metaphorically, they represent me holding tight to my Indian traditions, values and beliefs. I practice Indian identity through visiting temple every Sunday, donating money to charities back home and following my religion avidly. On the other hand, my daily life routine consists of wearing Canadian clothing not because its comfortable but it has become a part of my identity. As Canadian women,I see my self as a strong in-depended woman who has right to live her life in her own way. As a Canadian woman I am allowed to work late hours, drink wine and educate my self in the university. I am a blend of both cultures as picture shows blending of Indian wear with Canadian.

How can this photograph provide Opportunities for us to expand our notion of what Citizenship/Identity is now : I have opportunity to expand myself in bicultural context. I have two identies to
protect, Canadian and Indian. There is also a challenge to live in between two identities/culture. My goal becomes to find a middle ground between these two identities. Today in Canada many women are in the similar situation where they are protecting two identies. An example would be Japanese Canadian, Italian Canadian, and Muslim Canadian etc. In social studies curriculum, we are broadly
exposed to multiculturalism content where we learn about different countries and cultures of immigrants.

I took this picture because recent recession in Alberta as affected my graduating sister. As education plays a huge role in forming ones identity. Not finding a job upon graduation can have an affect in shaping your identity. As an Albertan its very important for me to talk about its recession periods.

What does this picture Tell us about your understanding or beliefs about
Citizenship/Identity today :
As said earlier education has always played important part in our identity. As a graduated Canadian and not able to find a job can be very disheartening. Graduated student has to pay their debt. There are many questions that arise with a question mark on her degree. For example: Was it worth paying so much for school? Will she ever find a job etc? As a Canadian citizen she has been
very disappointed with Job system in Canada.
