Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) of 5.6% recorded in the first quarter of 2015 was higher than most Asean and developed countries. Some of the countries include Singapore (2.1%), UK (2.4%) and USA (3%). The main factor boosting Malaysia's GDP is the private sector, with investments and consumption having a high growth.

For demand, the total consumption in Malaysia in the first quarter of 2015 recorded a 7.9% growth. This was due to a higher supply and services expenditure, largely contributed by food, non-alcoholic beverages, communications and transport. For supply, only the agriculture sector had a negative growth rate (-4.7%). According to the minister, agriculture was affected by the decline in oil prices, which contributed 41% to the sector. However, other sectors like mining, which had a double digit growth rate in crude oil, manufacturing, construction and services performed better and the growth rate was positive.
