When a baby is born the sex, defined through biological traits, is assigned to the baby. Sex often determines gender in society, meaning that if the baby has male genitalia, then the gender assigned will be a boy. What we can't assume about an individuals sex is their gender, but that is what society does.
The image below illustrates how you can be of one sex, but of a different gender.

The article goes into detail about the categories of sex, giving a much broader meaning to the word 'sex'. Male and female characteristics are also discussed and the term 'intersex' is defined. Cisgender and transgender are also major topics defined.

Gender Roles are an ever so common concept in the society, whether they are purposeful or not. We gradually assign roles that 'fit' our gender: such as women cleaning and men doing the heavy lifting. Gender roles are defined as a "set of societal norms dictating the types of behaviors which are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for people based on their actual or perceived sex or sexuality."
The picture below signifies the roles that both genders are supposed to play. The women is doing dishes in the house, while the man is cleaning his car.
