Per questa ragione, comunemente, il modello di Thomson è anche definito modello a panettone poiché gli elettroni sono presenti all'interno della struttura atomica, dispersi in modo casuale.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; L'esperimento di Thomson è antecedente alla scoperta del nucleo atomico che come oggi sappiamo è formato da protoni e neutroni . Questa caratteristica temporale rendeva plausibile l'ipotesi secondo la quale la struttura dell'atomo fosse compatta, senza la presenza di spazi, poiché soltanto attraverso l'esperimento di Rutherford si iniziò a comprendere la reale struttura di un atomo, formato da un nucleo, molto piccolo, e da elettroni che ruota attorno ad esso.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; La carica netta dell'atomo è neutra poiché il numero di particelle cariche negativamente, gli elettroni, bilancia esattamente il numero di particelle con carica positiva, i protoni.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Thomson per il suo esperimento utilizzò un tubo sottovuoto con agli estremi due elettrodi collegati ad un generatore. Abbiamo dunque una carica elettrica proveniente da catodo. Questi se sottoposti ad un campo magnetico esterno, tali raggi catodici vengono deviati. Questo sta a significare che essi sono costituiti da particelle elettricamente cariche. Se inoltre applichiamo esternamente anche un campo elettrico, si nota che i raggi sono sì deviati, ma verso il polo positivo. Questo sta a significare che i raggi elettricamente carichi sono elettricamente carichi negativamente. Siccome poi i raggi non provengono dalla natura del catodo, se ne deduce che queste cariche negative sono proprie di ogni atomo, di ogni materiale. Questo è l'esperimento con il quale Thomson deduce l'elettrone, e di conseguenza anche il protone.<br><br></div>]]></description>
