Pictured here is the Lorax encountering the local and infamous Mount Trashmore, a 225 ft tall landfill. This landfill was started by Waste Management Inc in 1965, and at that time it was only 10 ft tall and in a remote part of the county. Now, just 52 years later, I can take this Flat Lorax photo from the balcony of an 8 story building and not even be half as tall as the landfill. As the south Florida population has grown and more residential areas have popped up, the population's waste has also grown, leading to the development of this massive landfill. Trashmore currently takes in around 3,500 tons of trash daily from the local populations, including waste that I produce. Pictured here is the Lorax discovering the aftermath of Hurricane Irma of September 2017. With peak wind speeds hitting the Florida Keys at around 130 mph and mainland as a Category 3, the impacts of this hurricane were felt for weeks after landfall. All across the state of Florida homes, businesses, and schools lost power; some schools were closed for up to two weeks before class was called into session again, still without power. With winds as such high speeds, the impact of Irma was immediately understood. Traffic lights were out, trees were blown all over the roads and even into some people's yards and houses. This picture is of the remains of a multiple uprooted trees moved from the roadway to the sidewalk to that traffic could flow normally again. Irma is ranked #7 in the list of most intense hurricanes to make landfall in the contiguous United States and has had devastating impacts on the Caribbean Islands. Instead of tossing his cardboard and plastic waste into the bin to be taken to a dump and eventually to a landfill, the Lorax has elected to recycle his recyclables. Lorax is always disheartened to learn about the growing landfills and dumps that pollute our land and he hopes to encourage everyone else to do the same. In heavily populated areas where only half of the residents have access curb-side pick up, there are millions of recyclable materials that go to landfills, so he encourages people to find a plant near them to deliver their recyclables. In the last few decades, recyclable waste produces by human has increased exponentially, meaning their respective landfills have as well. Recycling things like plastic and cardboard can decrease this contribution to land pollution and slow the continued production of materials that land directly in landfills. Instead of driving to school and contributing to the astronomical, international rate of auto emissions, Lorax decided to get a breath of fresh air and some exercise on his way to school.  As the spokesman for the trees, the Lorax also cares about the atmosphere and air quality. Increased auto emissions that began growing exponentially with the globalization of automobiles for commuters have substantially increased the greenhouse effect on our global climate. Lorax is of the opinion that ever little bit matters, so he decided he is going to bike to school from now on. By reducing his own auto emissions, like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, Lorax is decreasing his contributions to air pollution and the accelerating greenhouse effect.
