Deaf Culture/ Disabilities in School, Disability & Education

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8NCnNq5/

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8NCgU3G/

This TikTok video is of a young woman explaining why the Deaf community is suing the DOE. this conveys the theme of deaf culture. The deaf community feels like they're over-referring students to deaf schools, however the argument is that these schools are for them. They have the necessary resources that allow deaf children to thrive in the school systems. They harbor certain resources that general education schools don't.

It also conveys the theme of disability & education. I say this because the point of evaluation is to get students the help they need. Instead, they are trying to counter the evaluators for trying to get the students into an environment they can thrive in. How are they getting sued for putting children where they are supposed to be. Unless the parent says they want their child in a LRE I don't understand the lawsuit.

Disability culture as a whole is portrayed not only because deafness is a disability. The lawsuit \ doesn't specify how which kids they feel were over-evaluated. They said as a whole it's too many kids being sent to deaf schools. But that could mean denying kids of service no matter how disabled they are.

A mother shares her platform to raise awareness of Sanfilippo syndrome. In this TikTok video, her son is seen with a pacifier. In the comments people say that he shouldn't have one, he's too old, she needs to take it away, etc. This is because the normal thing for people to see is a baby with a pacifier, but the pacifier soothes him. She chose to specify a comment about putting something that's not so tasty onto the pacifier so that he would reject it.

Other commentators who know what it's like being or dealing with disabilities (disability culture) were on her side saying that it's his comfort and people should understand that and not be judgmental. They always face a lot of backlash and judgment because of their videos.

In general, this page shows a mother and son's life dealing with this certain syndrome. It portrays the lives of People with Disabilities. It shows his struggles, his strengths, and how he interacts during his day-to-day life.
