When the war was over he became a lawyer and started practice in New York. He was probably the biggest reason why his state ratified the constitution. With his values in mind it is easy to say that he definitely tried very hard to give the constitution more power then it actually has. Given that he actually practiced law it would be resonable to assume he knew what he was talking about when he actually decided to take part.
