Hi! My name’s Luísa. I’m fifty three years old. I´m from Rio Maior, but I was born in Mozambique, and I’ve lived in this city since nineteen seventy four. I´m a psychologist and I work in the secondary school of Rio Maior. My mother tongue’s Portuguese, however I speak English and French a little bit.

I´ve been married for thirty one years and I have two children, a son, Diogo, of thirty years of age, an airplane pilot, and a daughter, Mariana, with twenty five, a flight attendant. I’m cheerful, friendly, sincere and fair.

In my spare time I like going to the gym, running, going to the cinema, watching TV, reading, being with friends and with my pets. I like doing sports and going to the beach, but I really love to stay at home or to go out with my family and friends. I dislike football and alcoholic drinks and I hate rude and unfair people. I prefer the countryside and the beach rather than the big cities. My dream is to always have my family close to me.

I´m trying to improve my English because I work in referral to adult lifelong training, namely Indians and other foreigners, and because I travel to countries, most of the time, alone, where I need to speak English to communicate, to be with my husband and my daughter that are working abroad.

Well, that´s me!

I’ve worked, as a psychologist, in the secondary school of Rio Maior, for thirty years now. This school have students from the 7th year to the 12th. It’s the only school in the city where there is a high school (10th to 12th year), with courses for further study in science and technology, socio-economic sciences and languages and humanities, but also professional courses, currently, in the areas of catering and tourism, mechanics, trade, sports, multimedia and health.

Some teachers give classes in two prisons in localities near Rio Maior, who have partnership with the secondary school, Vale de Judeus and Alcoentre.

In that school also exists a center that the adults can get academic and professional qualifications and learning or improve Portuguese and some foreigner languages, the “Qualifies Center”.

The school has been renovated and has great conditions: a lot of space, air-conditioned rooms, good labs, some computer rooms, a comfortable and well-equipped library, a very bright snack bar, a good canteen and a nice teacher’s room with cafeteria.

My work schedule is distributed through the attendance and support of students, teachers, management and the “Qualifies Center”, where I do the adult referral.

I like to work in this school because it has a democratic and friendly leadership, the school environment and culture are very pleasant. I have good friends in school and my work is respected and valued.

I’d like to do this course, first of all, because I’m interested in learning more about building family-school partnerships and engaging parents as learning partners.

Secondly, because I believe that parental engagement in school activities is essential to improving children’s and young people’s development and resolving behavioral problems.

Finally, because I want to find some tools that I can implement in my professional practice in order to facilitate more effective parental engagement.

In the current scenery of education, when we talk about evaluation the emphasis is put on the evaluation process, the assessment. Indeed, the assessment is extremely important as it allows students to be informed about content that is already learned and those that they do not yet master. It also allows to inform the teachers of the subject that each student has already internalized and of the contents that are still necessary to work.

However, the learning outcome, the final evaluation continues to be of central importance in that it will enable the student to be able to attend a college course or gain an advantage in getting a job.

Therefore, both evaluation and assessment are important and essential throughout the educational and learning process, allowing the success of the students in a system still very focused on learning outcomes and not so much for the integral development of the students.
