How does this scene drive the plot?

This scene can technically be seen as the Climax of the play. It is seen as the climax because all of his anger, mistrust, and betrayal is built up into this scene.

"What wilt thou do? Thou wilt not murder me? Help, help, ho"

This is also the moment when Gertrude becomes aware of how willing Hamlet is to take revenge and do what he wants. If his own mother fears for his life then you know that he must be at the point of no return. After this fight, he commits his first murder and after that moment he does not care about the consequences of the actions because he already believes that he is going to hell. This lack of interest in the negative results of his actions leads him to be more careless and cause more harm.

Hamlet confronts his mother about her relationship with Claudius. He tells her (in a very authoritative tone) that she is not allowed to be with Claudius, and forbids her from sleeping in the same room as him any longer. Hamlet's madness grows as he yells at her, saying that she is too old to have any forms of desire and to satisfy those desires by sleeping with his uncle. After that, Polonius is discovered by Hamlet and killed in a fit of rage.

Theme: Mistrust to the point of misogyny

"A murderer and a villain / A slave that is not twentieth part the tithe / Of your precedent lord, a vice of kings, / A cutpurse of the empire and the rule, / That from a shelf the precious diadem stole / And put in his pocket" (line 41-45 Act 3 Scene 4)

As Hamlet accosts his mother for her decision to marry Claudius after old Hamlet was killed, the audience is able to clearly see the extent of Hamlet's misogynistic mindset. This idea is brought up throughout the entire play but becomes increasingly evident as Hamlet learns more about his father's fate. Hamlet's misogyny extends from his strong mistrust of his mother over her betrayal of his father. His severe harshness in this excerpt towards the very woman who bore him emphasizes how negatively Hamlet views all women now. Although the play itself revolves around his desire for revenge, his misogynistic nature expands from the constant betrayal and trauma that Hamlet is forced to endure.
