"The Great Gilly Hoplins" by Katherine Paterson and "Coppersun" by Sharon M. Draper share a similar social issue. In the this book, Gilly's mom left her when she was younger and she has been passed through many homes in her life. Her one goal in life is that she is able to find her mother again and she doesn't have to keep going from place to place trying to learn to call it home. She acts up because of this so she never has to stay in a home she knows isn't her real one and she will never call it home forever. This book theme relates to "Coppersun" because in this book she also has to be a slave going to horrible places through her journey that do not come close to what her home used to be and it will never be the same.
