By the end of the night her whole family has been brutally murdered. The slave traders drag her off to the ship and that is the only the beginning of the terrifying journey of becoming slave property. Draper share a similar social issue. In the this book, Gilly's mom left her when she was younger and she has been passed through many homes in her life. Her one goal in life is that she is able to find her mother again and she doesn't have to keep going from place to place trying to learn to call it home. She acts up because of this so she never has to stay in a home she knows isn't her real one and she will never call it home forever.
