Because of this, the production of movies had to be scaled down. So, Dracula was made, which was cost effective, and, it was the first horror movie with sound. In this movie, there were many soundless scenes, which was a trope used to terrify the audience. Although the movie was a sensation, it lacked a dark setting. In Frankenstein the opening scene was set in a graveyard, a very grim place to be in. This set the tone of horror throughout the movie. The movie overall was a lot different, as it had some very morbid scenes such as when the monster throws the girl into the river. This made the movie much more terrifying and controversial.

Horror first began in the late 1890s, but did not have a large cultural effect until the 1930s. These early films were adapted from gothic novels by authors such as Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe. Between the 1930s and 50s, Universal Studios transitioned to horror movies with monsters, which was a huge success. These movies used social anxieties to create fiction that the people would enjoy. However, horror truly changed when Alfred Hitchcock joined the scene in 1960, with movies such as Psycho, which was a huge fan favourite. During the Vietnam War, horror movies used the social anxieties of the time to create more effective movies. Some very obvious tropes include death by sex and the final girl. These tropes were explored in "Halloween". During the 1990s and 2000s, psychological horror movies were quite popular, but a new sub-genre had emerged: found footage.

As an example, he started as a silent film director, so when movies transitioned having sound, Alfred Hitchcock utilised visual storytelling. He also utilised mise-en-scene to build a climax and let the audience dive deeper into the story. He also focused on themes such as obsession, as well as music to further enhance the suspense of the scene.

Firstly, he believed that information was very important in creating suspense, so he always gave the audience information that was crucial, but was unknown to the protagonist. He also utilised montages, which allowed him to tell the story using different pieces of an event and controlling their timing. Finally, Hitchcock was known for simplicity, as he thought that overtly complex stories would be too confusing.

Suspense:
In the movie, Hitchcock creates suspense to terrify the viewer. For example, in the famous shower scene where the protagonist is murdered, before she is killed, the scene is very eerie and quiet. This creates suspense that something may happen.

Music:
The use of music is very evident in the movie, in many scenes. For example, when the protagonist is trying to get away from the police, the score of the scene is very intense, as though someone is on her tail. This makes the viewer nervous about what will happen.

Setting:
The movie is also set in a very distinct, unusual location. Normally, motel are on the main highway so that people can actually find it. However, the motel in the movie is in a remote area, quite far from the highway. This definitely reinforces the plot as a remote place means if something happens to the protagonist, there is a high chance that they will not be found.
