There was a spike in Organized Crime in the 1920s which was caused by the prohibition act which prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol.

This caused bootlegging and importing and transporting alcohol from around countries that hadn't banned it or speakeasies, a illegal bar where one had to say a password to enter to buy alcohol. One of the biggest figures of the organized crime was Al Capone. Many criminals would bribe cops to avoid being arrested.

The Prohibition era was when the 18th amendment which banned the sale, manufacture, and transportation of Alcohol in the U.S. which was ratified January 16, 1919 and put in effect on January 17, 1920.

This led to the rise of Organized Crime with big figures such as Al Capone (Scarface) and illegal drinking spots known as speakeasies. Early 1933, Congress proposed a solution to the 18th Amendment which became the 21st Amendment which repealed it, basically making it not an Amendment and alcohol was legal again.

Following the first World War, Jazz musicians from New Orleans started to move to major cities like Chicago and New York. Jazz was commonly played at speakeasies and illegal night clubs during the prohibition era. One of the most popular venues was the Cotton Club where people would listen to the jazz and dance. This spawned popular jazz stars such as Duke Ellington.

Jazz was an influence for young people to rebel against the traditional culture of music in the past generations. Of course since Jazz was originated from African Americans, racial prejudice was a challenge for Jazz.
