Intersectionality is a concept created by scholar Kimberlee Crenshaw to explain how aspects of our identities intersect to create a specific experience of oppression. Johnson's experience as a queer Black man is different from that of a heterosexual Black man, etc.

Something I wanted to comment on is the mass criticism of this book. I have heard LOTS of people speak negatively about this book, but at the end of the day this book is not fiction. It is George Matthew Johnson's life. He lived it. I feel like the majority of people saying this book should be banned and that it's inappropriate are the same people who judge people based on their sexuality, gender, and/or race. Which completely takes away from the overall message of the book. We're all humans. All of us are experiencing life for the first time. No matter how different our experiences may be our differences does not make us any less human.
