All living things are made of carbon. Carbon does not stay still. Carbon combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide.
plants absorb carbon dioxide and sunlight to make their own food. The carbon stays inside plant and the plant emits oxygen which we breath. Over a long period of time, the carbon in plants and animals turn into fossil fuels. Fossil fuels turns carbon into atmosphere and the cycle restarts.
