Rafia Khanam: By creating clear learning outcomes for each grade level, curriculum designers can ensure that specific outcomes and tasks of each grade prepare students for the challenges of the following academic year. These expressly articulated objectives allow stakeholders to visualize the goals set forth for the students in their learning community so we can ensure they are valid and being met. In other words, these clear outcomes allow for vertical alignment of learning objectives and assessment tasks that grow in difficulty and complexity while, ultimately, preparing students to succeed after they have left the school. Identify desired results. Upon completing a module or lesson in your course, or by the end of the semester, what knowledge, skills, or abilities should your students have achieved?

Determine acceptable evidence. What forms of documentation do you need to evaluate students’ progress toward proficiency in the learning objectives and course goals? In other words, what assessments will you incorporate into your class for students to demonstrate their learning?

Plan learning activities and instructional materials. What engagement activities and direct instruction will you provide to support students’ achievement of the learning objectives and course goals.
