Background

Lake District (also known as Lakeland or the Lakes) is a highland located in North West England. Like its name suggests, it is popular for its 16 lakes, but also for its gorgeous forests and fells. It was designated a UNESCO site in 2017 and it covers an area of around 2400 square kilometers.

History

The Lake district is very rich in history going back even thousands of years.

By 100AD the romans reached the district. It was at the frontier of the Roman Empire, so they built some military bases here. Then, they built roads, forts and camps.

Later, Norse people — who had settled originally in Ireland — came here to escape political turmoil. They constructed many great monuments, like crosses and earthworks.

The area was designated a national park in 1951. Originally, the Lake District was divided between 3 English counties, Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, but, in 1974, an administrative unit was created and, now, the district is completely within Cumbria. A year before being designated an UNESCO site, the park was extended by 3%, towards Yorkshire Dales National Park, in order to incorporate the Lune Valley.

With more than 18 km in length and 1,5 km wide, Windermere is the largest natural lake in Lake District and in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice. It is one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes. It forms part of the border between the historic counties of Lancashire and Westmorland. Today, it is within the administrative county of Cumbria. The lake contains 18 islands. The largest, Belle Isle, is around 1 km in length and it used to be the centre of the manor of Windermere. The other islands are considered 'holms' which means small isle. The lake has a relatively low percentage of lake bed in depth which is rocky. This makes Windermere a rich habitat. The main fish that inhabit it are trout, char, pike and perch. Additionally, the lake play the role of a migration highway, with geese often seen here in winter.

William Wordsworth often described the view of Windermere from the crest of a hill in his 4th book, The Prelude. Later, Oscar Wilde began working on his first hit play, Lady Windermere's Fan. A series of books for children by Arthur Randsome was inspired by this lake.

There are some legends similar to The Loch Ness Monster surrounding Windermere, the lake monster being nicknamed "Bownessie".
